Debra Kinsey is a Melbourne-based handknitting designer and pattern writer. The challenges and satisfactions of ‘making’ have always been of great interest to Debra and creating something by hand has remained an abiding passion. Debra first learned how to knit and sew as a child from her mother. Debra has spent many years hand making her way through all sorts of garments, accessories and homewares.
Debra spent 30 years of her professional working life in the hand-knitting world, working with a number of leading yarn companies as a pattern writer and checker, sample knitter, hand-knitting teacher, technical editor and studio manager. Debra has owned a knitting shop business – buying, selling, advising and teaching knitting techniques. She loves the community of hand-knitters that this created. Debra completed a Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing at RMIT, to support and further her skills in publishing.
With the dream of working for herself, designing and publishing her own knitting patterns, Debra made her dreams come to life. Today, publishing her own designs, Debra has built up a portfolio of beautiful knitting patterns. Debra also works as a freelance pattern writer and tech editor.
Debra has worked on projects for several clients, including magazines like Homespun and Better Homes and Gardens, and yarn companies and more recently designed a piece for the just-released White Gum Wool Wrapped Collection, based in Tasmania.
