Could this be Australia's largest shibori piece? Come and judge for yourself at Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair June 22 - 26. Sail set to shine – Australia's biggest shibori piece.A huge colourful silk sail will delight onlookers at the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair. The 26 metre long by 2.25m wide sail, produced by 130 Western Australia Fibre & Textile Association members, is made up of no less than 144 pieces of hand shibori dyed silk. Shibori is cloth resist-dyeing technique that involves stitching, scrunching, folding, clamping or tying the fabric into sections so that the dye creates beautiful intricate patterns. This labour intensive method has been used to dye patterns on silk in Japan for centuries. The final art work was constructed using fine French seams and took 14 of the ladies 10 hours of sewing to assemble.
