Presented by the National Association of New Zealand Quilters (NANZQ)
NANZQ again welcomes visitors to their annual members’ juried exhibition, NANZQ Quilts Aotearoa, held in association with the Craft & Quilt Fair.
More than 130 selected quilts will take part in the competition which will be judged the day before the fair opens. Prizes will be awarded for Best Bed Quilt, Best Traditional Wall Quilt, Best Innovative Wall Quilt, Best Machine Quilting, Best Hand Quilting, Best Use of Colour and Fibre Connection – a category designed to attract the creative art quilter. There is also a Junior Category – this is open to all intermediate and secondary school students and attracts some stunning work. The quilts will also compete for the prestigious Best of Show award.
Visitors will also have the chance to see the eight Best of Australia Quilts on show – winners of the Best of Show awards from state quilt guild shows around Australia in 2008. These spectacular quilts are touring exclusively with the Craft & Quilt Fairs and are sponsored by Bernina.
During the fair several well known members of NANZQ will be present at the display including Marion Manson of Hamilton, designer of the exhibition; Mary Transom of Ohope, Bay of Plenty – 2007 winner of Best of Show, Best Traditional Bed Quilt and Best and Merit Use of Colour Awards; and Barbara Bilyard of Auckland who has been one of NANZQ’s judges for the past two years. All three are experienced teachers as well as skilled artists and they will be happy to share their knowledge and passion for quilting with fair visitors.
NANZQ was formed in 1994 with the aim of promoting and assisting the development of quilting and textile arts in New Zealand. The association provides opportunities for members of all skill levels to expand their quilting horizons, share their knowledge and information, and generally enjoy their art. A Feast of Quilts in Hamilton
In addition to NANZQ Quilts Aotearoa the association issues biennial challenges to members. The theme of the 2009 challenge is ‘Illumination – the act or process of lighting up; shedding light upon or giving spiritual or intellectual light to’. 20 selected quilts from the challenge, in association with Husqvarna Viking, will be on show at the ArtsPost Gallery, 120 Victoria Street, Hamilton, from September 4-28, 2009. Treat yourself to few days in Hamilton and enjoy the fair and all the quilts on show.
