Island Quilts 2009

Presented by the Tasmanian Quilting Guild Inc (TQG)

Celebrating their silver anniversary, the guild will show more than 160 member quilts competing for Best of Show and a variety of other annual prizes. These include traditional, art quilts, pictorial, appliqué and group quilts – both professional and amateur.

There will also be a number of other displays for visitors to enjoy:

Winners from the Past is a collection of prize winning quilts from past Tasmanian Quilting Guild exhibitions to celebrate their 25th year.
• The Junior Textile Competition with prizes for both Primary and Secondary students in either group or individual sections.
• A selection of Journal Quilts made by the Australian and New Zealand ArtQuilters online group. Journal quilts are A4 in size, so they are a perfect way to experiment with techniques, methods and colours.
Best of Australia Quilts – The eight state finalists from the Bernina National Quilt Award will be displayed together.
• Multi-award winning Tasmanian quilter, Shirley Gillam, will showcase her quilting journey, presenting not only her recent work, but also the very first quilt she made.
The 2008 Challenge. The challenge was to use an exclusive Tasmanian fabric with the guidelines - any shape or size except a rectangle or square - and some very interesting quilts have been created.
‘Through Our Eyes’ Memories of Cape Barren Island is a collection of quilts commissioned by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Elders Council of Tasmania Inc and made by TQG member Suzanne MacDonald.

Guild members will be running a demonstration area each day of the fair where the public will be shown all steps of quilt making – from fabric stash to final binding. The quilts made during the demonstrations will be donated to hospital paediatric wards around Tasmania. To find out more about all the guild activities and the benefits of becoming a member, visit the exhibition at the fair.

Raffle Quilt - Buy a $2 raffle ticket for your chance to win this beautiful quilt (pictured above), A Touch of Iridescence. This year’s raffle quilt was made by the Town & Country Patchwork & Quilters of Smithton. The raffle will be drawn at 3pm on Sunday at the fair.

An Evening with the Judges - The guild will host a social evening led by Jan Preston from Victoria at the Rosny Library on Thursday, June 25 at 7pm. Cost is $5 for guild members and $10 for non-members. Contact the guild on 03 6427 3563 or email info@tasquiltguild.org.au for more details.
